A Journey Around the World was celebrated by over 250 dancers of the Darien School of Dance, 49 Old Kings Hwy N, Darien, recently at Darien High School. The youngest ballerinas from the school’s Mom & Me class were butterflies from Peru dancing with their moms in the rain forest. There were also birds from Rio, zebras from Africa, hula girls from Polynesia and tulips from Holland to name a few. The countries of Austria, China, Italy, Greece, France, Russia, Mexico, Egypt, India and the Caribbean were also represented, as was the USA.
Founded by Brigita Fulton, director and ABT® Certified Teacher, the school offers classes in Pre-Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Mom & Me, and Ballet with an emphasis on classical ballet training. “I wanted this to be an educational as well as an enjoyable experience for the children,” Brigita explains. “Dance education is not just about memorizing dance steps. We learned about different parts of the world and how dancers dance in different dance styles. We also learned what each nation or region was famous for, some key phrases and also how to count in Spanish and French.”
She continues, “We were privileged to host a ballerina from China who gave private lessons to the fifth-grade ballet class on the art of Chinese Fan Dance. Our past recital and months leading up to was a cultural exchange and a true lesson in diversity.”
